Coping

It seems like everyone utilizes coping mechanisms of some sort. They may range from benign to life threatening, but whether it's smoking, eating, napping or drinking, what is it that "takes the edge off" or restores some sense of balance? Is it a feeling of control? An escape?

It's called evasion; getting out of focus or you could say, avoiding reality. Life is tough and there are hard things to deal with on earth, so people love 'tuning out' by evading. Probably one of the most psychologically damaging behaviors one can do.

I wasn't so much judging escape/coping mechanisms as I was pondering why they promise relief.

Like I said, escape from reality. They promise relief because they are an escape from reality; the difficulties of being a human in a fallen world.
